The political party, The Association of Combatant Clerics (which Khatami and Rouhani are members of) wrote a letter to the President asking him about violations of the Constitution; specifically, a media ban on Khatami.

On May 5th, The Association of Combatant Clerics published a letter on their official website addressed to the President, Hassan Rouhani wishes to use his legal authority and his responsibility in implementing the Iranian Constitution to prevent such violations of the law.

This letter, signed by the Secretary General of the Association – Mr. Mohammad Mousavi Khoini – addresses the issues of legal violations and a disregard for individual civil rights, specifically, the ban of any and all publications, pictures, and videos about former President Mohammad Khatami.

Gholamhosein Mohseniajei, the First Deputy and Spokesman for the Judiciary, announced four months ago that the decision to ban the publications of pictures and news about Mohammad Khatami is still in effect and for those who do not abide by this prohibition will face the consequences.

The Islamic Azad University News Agency reported on May 7th that according to Mohammad Moghadam, a member of the Association, the judicial decree that banned Khatami from the media was without legal documentation and was discussed on numerous occasions during their meetings until they decided to write a letter to Rouhani.

Moghadam said that “after sending the letter to the Office of the President, Rouhani sent a letter to the Judiciary about the Association’s questions and a copy was sent to the Association. Mohseniajei goes on to claim that the Judiciary can decide who is an “insubordinate leader” or the Supreme National Security Council can decide, without any court orders, warrants, or notifications.

In the official documents of the Islamic Republic, two reformist candidates who protested the 1388 (2009) Presidential election results, Mehdi Karoubi and Mir Hosein Mousavi, are read as “insubordinate leaders”.

The Association wrote to Rouhani that the claims made by the Spokesman of the Judiciary is designed in a way that, “the legal documents of this ban and threat were not presented or announced.”

Efforts have been made by the Judiciary to justify the illegal restrictions on citizens by connecting it to the decision of the Supreme National Security Council from the second half of 1392 (2013) with the existing claim of house arrest for Karoubi and Mousavi entering a new level.
